Siding Damage: Signs to Watch For and When to Replace

June 1, 20245 min read

Your siding is your home's first line of defense against weather. Here's how to spot damage before it becomes a bigger problem.

Your home's siding does more than make it look good — it's a critical part of the building envelope, protecting your home's structure and insulation from water, wind, and pests. When siding is compromised, the damage it allows often costs far more to fix than the siding replacement itself.

Here's how to spot siding damage early and know when it's time to replace.

Cracks and Holes

Any crack, hole, or gap in siding is an entry point for water and pests. On vinyl siding, look for:

  • Cracks along the length of planks
  • Impact holes from hail, debris, or lawnmower rocks
  • Splits or fractures at corners and joints

On wood siding, cracks allow water to penetrate and begin wood rot. Even small cracks should be addressed promptly.

On fiber cement siding, look for chips at the edges — particularly at cut ends that weren't properly sealed during installation.

Warping and Buckling

Vinyl siding that has warped, buckled, or pulled away from the wall is no longer lying flat against the sheathing. This creates gaps where wind-driven rain can force water behind the siding and into the wall.

Warping can be caused by:

  • Heat exposure (vinyl melts from grill heat, reflected window heat, or extreme sun)
  • Improper installation — vinyl needs room to expand and contract; over-nailing causes buckling
  • Impact from hail or debris
  • Age and UV degradation

Fading and Chalking

Significant color fading or chalky residue on the surface indicates UV degradation of the material. While this is primarily cosmetic, it often signals that the siding is nearing the end of its service life and may be becoming more brittle.

Rot (Wood and Fiber Cement)

Wood siding is particularly susceptible to rot when moisture gets in. Press on any suspect areas with a screwdriver — if it sinks in, the wood is rotted and must be replaced. Rot rarely stays confined to one plank; it typically spreads to adjacent boards and potentially into the wall sheathing behind.

Fiber cement siding resists rot well but can absorb water at unfinished edges, cut ends, and areas where the paint coat has failed. Bubbling or swelling at the edges of fiber cement boards indicates water infiltration.

Mold and Mildew Staining

Dark staining on siding can be mold or mildew — which thrives where moisture is consistently present. A small amount on the surface can sometimes be cleaned, but persistent mold growth often indicates moisture is being trapped behind the siding. This warrants a more thorough inspection of what's happening in the wall cavity.

Loose or Missing Sections

Siding that has come loose or blown off entirely leaves your home directly exposed to weather. After any significant windstorm, walk the perimeter of your home and look for:

  • Missing panels or sections
  • Panels hanging or partially detached
  • Damage at overlapping seams

Interior Signs of Siding Failure

Sometimes the first sign of siding failure is what you see inside:

  • Water stains on interior walls that don't correspond to a roof leak
  • Musty odors in wall areas
  • Bubbling or peeling paint on interior drywall

These indicate water is getting in through the exterior envelope and finding its way to the interior — a serious situation that needs immediate attention.

Repair vs. Full Replacement

Spot repair makes sense when:

  • Damage is isolated to a small area (a few planks)
  • The rest of the siding is in good condition
  • The siding style and color are still available for matching

Full replacement makes sense when:

  • Damage is widespread (storm hail damage often affects the entire house)
  • The siding is older and showing multiple failure signs
  • The material is difficult to match
  • Insurance is covering a storm damage claim (insurers often approve full replacement when matching isn't possible)

Storm Damage and Insurance

Hail and wind damage to siding is often covered under homeowner's insurance. After a storm, inspect your siding carefully and document any damage with photos. Many homeowners don't realize their siding was damaged until water starts getting in months later.
