A sewage backup in your home is a Category 3 biohazard. Here's exactly what to do, what not to do, and when to call a professional.
A sewage backup is one of the most unpleasant — and dangerous — water damage events a homeowner can face. Raw sewage contains bacteria, viruses, and pathogens that pose serious health risks. It is classified as Category 3 "black water" by the IICRC, meaning it requires professional remediation with proper protective equipment and disposal protocols.
If you have sewage backing up into your home through floor drains, toilets, or sinks, here's what you need to know.
Why Sewage Backup Is Different from a Burst Pipe
Not all water damage is equal. Water damage is classified into three categories:
Category 1 — Clean Water: Water from a clean source like a burst supply line or overflowing sink. Lowest risk.
Category 2 — Grey Water: Water with some contaminants — washing machine overflow, dishwasher backup. Moderate risk.
Category 3 — Black Water: Sewage, flood water from outside, or any water that has become highly contaminated. Highest risk. Requires full protective gear, containment, and proper disposal.
Sewage backup is always Category 3. Period.
Immediate Steps After a Sewage Backup
1. Get everyone out of the affected area immediately. Do not let children or pets near the contaminated area. Even brief contact can cause illness.
2. Do not use any drains or toilets in the home until the blockage is cleared. Running water elsewhere can worsen the backup.
3. Turn off the electricity to affected areas if you can do so safely without entering the space. Do not touch electrical switches or outlets that may have been exposed to water.
4. Ventilate the area. Open windows and exterior doors near the affected area. Sewage gases are toxic and need to be ventilated.
5. Call a plumber to address the blockage — before calling a restoration company, the source needs to be stopped. Common causes include:
- Main sewer line blockage (tree roots, debris, grease buildup)
- City sewer line backup
- Septic system failure
- Failed sump pump
6. Call a professional restoration company. Once the blockage is cleared, sewage cleanup must be handled by professionals with Category 3 protocols.
What NOT to Do
- Do not attempt to clean up sewage yourself without proper PPE — at minimum, N95 respirator, rubber gloves, goggles, and rubber boots. Even then, amateur cleanup typically misses contaminated material inside walls and subfloors.
- Do not run HVAC systems in or near the affected area. This can spread contaminated aerosols through your entire home.
- Do not save soft materials that have been in direct contact with sewage — carpet, rugs, upholstered furniture. These must be removed and disposed of properly.
- Do not use bleach as a primary cleanup method. Bleach kills surface bacteria but doesn't penetrate porous materials or address structural contamination.
What Professional Sewage Cleanup Looks Like
A licensed restoration company handles Category 3 contamination in a systematic way:
Containment: Sealing off the affected area to prevent cross-contamination to the rest of the home.
Removal: All contaminated materials — carpet, padding, drywall, insulation — are removed and disposed of following health department guidelines.
Extraction: Commercial-grade equipment removes all standing liquid.
Antimicrobial treatment: EPA-registered disinfectants are applied to all affected surfaces, including concrete floors and wall cavities.
Drying and monitoring: Commercial drying equipment runs until all moisture levels return to normal. This prevents secondary mold growth.
Reconstruction: All removed materials are replaced — new drywall, new flooring, new insulation.
Does Insurance Cover Sewage Backup?
This depends on your policy. Standard homeowner's insurance does NOT automatically cover sewer backup — it's typically an add-on endorsement called "water backup coverage" or "sewer backup coverage." This coverage can usually be added for a relatively modest premium increase.
If you don't have this endorsement, you may still have coverage if the backup was caused by a covered event (like a plumbing failure). Review your policy carefully and discuss it with your adjuster.
Health Symptoms After Sewage Exposure
If anyone in your home was exposed to sewage water, watch for:
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
- Skin rash or irritation
- Eye irritation
- Fever
Seek medical attention immediately if any of these symptoms appear.
